City of Norwich, district of Norwich, and county town of Norfolk, England, Located on the River Wensum, Norwich is a fair distance from London (approximately 100 miles), Ipswich (about 40 miles), and Peterborough (about 65 miles) to the north and east. Norwich is the largest city and metropolitan region in East Anglia; it is also the seat of the See of Norwich and home to one of the country's largest medieval cathedrals.

Geography of Norwich

Norwich is 40 miles (64 km) north of Ipswich and 65 miles (104 km) east of Peterborough, making it 100 miles (161 km) north-east of London.

The climate of Norwich is marine temperate, just like the rest of the British Isles. It enjoys a temperate climate and receives a moderate amount of rain throughout the year. Until early 2006, the closest official met-office weather station with available records was Coltishall, located about 11 miles (18 km) to the north-east; however, readings are now provided by Norwich Airport. Norwich, perched on an outcropping of East Anglia in the North Sea, is subject to weather that has less of an impact elsewhere in the country, such as snow or sleet showers in the winter on a northerly or easterly breeze or sea fog/haar in the summer. In June 1976, 33.1 °C (91.6 °F) was the warmest temperature ever measured in Coltishall. However, if you go all the way back to 1932, Norwich's absolute record high temperature was 35.6 °C (96.1 °F). In July of 2022, the Norwich Weather Centre recorded a temperature of 37.0 degrees Celsius. Temperatures of 25.1 degrees Celsius (77.2 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher are expected on 9.9 days per year, with a high of 28.8 degrees Celsius (83.8 degrees Fahrenheit) expected on the warmest day of the year.

Economy of Norwich

Historically, Norwich's economy relied on manufacturing, especially the production of shoes; however, the city shifted to a service economy in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2011, the Greater Norwich economy (which include the city of Norwich as well as the districts of Broadland and South Norfolk) was projected to be worth £7.4 billion in gross value added (GVA). Three-and-a-half-percent of the city's workforce is employed in business and financial services, twenty-six percent in government, twelve percent in retail, eight percent in manufacturing, and seven percent in travel and tourism.

A new entertainment complex called Riverside has been built on the original Boulton and Paul property, and it features nightclubs and other facilities that cater to the typical national leisure brands. Along the banks of the River Wensum, new homes are being built as part of an upgrading to the nearby football stadium.

In Norwich, a popular condiment called mustard is created. A plant in Carrow, now owned by Unilever, first produced the now-iconic yellow-and-black Colman's labeled products in 1814. Due to a supply agreement with Unilever, mustard production moved to Condimentum's facility in Honingham, and the site closed in 2019. Colman's has helped place Norwich on the map as a center for iconic British exports. The Colman's Mustard Shop, which sold mustard and related items, was housed in Norwich's historic Royal Arcade until 2017.

Located in the city's southwestern quadrant, the Norwich Research Park is home to over thirty science and technology-based firms, the University of East Anglia, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, as well as the Institute of Food Research and the John Innes Centre.

As a city in a predominantly agricultural area, Norwich was well-positioned to serve the needs of the agricultural sector. Below the Castle Mound, in what is now known as Norwich Livestock Market, livestock were sold and bought for many years prior to 1960. Although it has shrunk in size since that year, the Livestock Market in Harford still holds regular auctions of livestock like as poultry, cattle, sheep, and farm machinery.
