About Healey

Description of Healey

A civil parish and a tiny community, Healey may be found in the Harrogate area of North Yorkshire, England. Valley of the River Burn, just west of Fearby. Located in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it lies about three miles west of Masham. Among the four Grade II Listed structures in the area is the historic grain mill known as Healey Mill, which is now used as a holiday house.

A considerable portion of Masham Moor, a grouse moor, rising to the top of Great Haw, 6.5 miles (10.5 km) from the settlement at the western limit of the parish, is also included in the civil parish, as are the hamlets of Leighton and Gollinglith Foot in the lower part of Colsterdale. In 2013, the parish's population was projected to be around 100.

History of Healey

In the past, the area now known as Healey was part of the wapentake of Hang East in the North Riding of Yorkshire and the sizable ancient parish of Masham. After the Great Disruption of 1849, Healey was established as its own parish for religious purposes. Healey with Sutton became a civil parish in 1866. Two miles (three kilometers) to the north-east of Healey, the little community of Sutton (High Sutton, Low Sutton, Sutton Penn, and Sutton Grange) was relocated to the parish of Ellington High and Low in 1886. The civil parish of Masham and East Witton was renamed Healey in 1934 to accommodate the addition of 3,213 acres (1,300 ha) of unoccupied Masham Moor.

Governance

Up until the year 1974, Healey was a part of the Masham Rural District (formerly the Masham Urban District) in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It's now a part of Harrogate Borough, North Yorkshire.

The parish is currently part of a consolidated council alongside Colsterdale, Fearby, Ellingstring, and Ilton cum Pott; this body is known as the Fearby, Healey and District Parish Council.
