Description of Hornby, Lancaster
Hornby, a former civil parish and settlement located 9 miles (14 km) from Lancaster in the parish of Hornby-with-Farleton, is located in the Lancaster district of the county of Lancashire, England. The town sits on the junction of the Rivers Wenning and Lune. There were 468 people living in the urban core in 2011. There were 358 people living in the parish in 1881.
In the Domesday Book, Hornby was included under its Old English name, Hornebi.
Hornby, located in the Melling parish, was both a township and a chapelry.
Before its merger with Farleton on 24 March 1887, Hornby existed as a civil parish in its own right beginning in 1866.
Amenities
St. Margaret's Church, located on Main Street, and Hornby Castle, a county mansion perched above the hamlet, are two of Hornby's most notable landmarks. Castle Swarde was begun in the 13th century as a successor to the earlier Castle Stede. The tower dates back to the 1600s, but the remainder was built in the 1800s and 1900s. Despite the fact that the castle has been converted into apartments, it still serves as a prominent landmark in the town. Although the castle and its grounds at Hornby are privately owned, the gardens are open to the public for a small price for two weekends a year (in February for snowdrops and in May). While you won't be able to go inside the castle itself, you can explore the grounds at your leisure. Along with the gardens and the primary school (Hornby St. Margaret's C of E Primary School) on Main Street, there is also a village institute in the area. The earthwork ruins of Castle Stede, a motte-and-bailey castle built in the eleventh or twelfth century, can be found one mile to the north of the castle.
Until its closure in August 2009, Hornby had a high school named Hornby High School.
