Clifton, England, is both a residential neighborhood and one of Bristol's 35 municipal wards. Cliftonwood and Hotwells are also part of the Clifton ward. Clifton Down is the ward that includes the eastern portion of the suburb.
Some of Clifton's most famous landmarks include the town's namesake suspension bridge, cathedral, college, club, high school, Bristol, Goldney Hall, and down.
There are 10,452 people and 5,007 houses in the Clifton ward, which includes Hotwells, as per the revised 2001 census. The same source estimates that there are 9,538 people and 4,741 houses in the Clifton East ward. There are now 27% of residents aged 16-74 enrolled in some sort of formal education program in the Clifton ward.
Cliftonwood is a residential neighborhood located near Bristol, England. It is roughly defined by Clifton Vale to the west, the Hotwell Road to the south, Jacob's Wells Road and Constitution Hill to the east and north-east, and the gardens of Goldney Hall, a University of Bristol hall of residence, to the north. Ambra Vale in the southwest and Clifton Wood Road in the northeast are the only roadways in and out, though there are numerous footpaths. Cliftonwood (one word) and Clifton Wood (two words) appear as spellings for the same location on several websites (two words).
Only the Lion bar provides any sort of commercial activity in the otherwise quiet suburb. Cliftonwood is primarily comprised of big Victorian terraces, many of which have been painted vivid colors. These colorful houses are visible from the backs of the buildings on Ambrose Road and Clifton Wood Terrace, which are visible from Bristol's harborside.
Durdham Down, just to the north of Clifton, is a recreational area known for its flat terrain and openness. Clifton Down is a wooded region on the western part of town that borders the gorge. Bristol Zoo, Clifton College, Clifton High School, the former Amberley House preparatory school, Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School, The Clifton Club, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge are all located in Clifton.
Clifton is conveniently connected to the rest of Bristol via regular bus routes and the nearby Clifton Down train station on the Severn Beach line. The city center and western suburbs are easily accessible via road, and so is North Somerset's Leigh Woods via the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Clifton Rocks Railway linked it to Hotwells between the years 1893 and 1934.
