History of Carleton

Originally known as Carlentun, Carleton made an appearance in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The name comes from the Old Scandinavian word karl and the Old English word tn, which together mean "farmstead or estate of the freemen or peasants."

According to the findings of that survey, Earl Tostig owned a plot of land that stretched across four carucates.

Both Gilbert Fitz Reinfred and Emma de St. John owned Carleton in the 12th and 13th centuries, respectively.

Carleton St. Hilda's C of E Primary School, a free institution established in 1604, is still in operation today.

Located in Carleton, the Carleton Crematorium and Cemetery first welcomed visitors in 1935.

Governance

The Carleton Electoral Ward is part of the Wyre and Preston North parliamentary district. As of the 2011 census, there were 4,061 people living in this section of town. Conservative MP Ben Wallace has represented Wyre and Preston North since the seat was created in 2010.

Religion

Located side by side on Fleetwood Road is a church for two different Christian denominations: the Anglican St. Hilda of Whitby and the Roman Catholic St. Martin de Porres.

St. Hilda's is a part of the parish of St. Chad's Church in Poulton-le-Fylde, which is in the Diocese of Blackburn.

Lancaster's Roman Catholic Diocese is home to St. Martin's.
