Maps & Location

Tweeddale is located in Scotland

Tweeddale

You'll find Tweeddale in the district administered by the Scottish Borders Council in southeastern Scotland, and it also serves as a committee area and lieutenancy area. Peeblesshire's borders mirror those of the original county.

Geography of Tweeddale

In 2015, the region was home to an estimated 20,848 people. It's one of the five Scottish Borders committee areas. Peebles, Innerleithen, and West Linton are the largest cities in the region.

The upper sections of the River Tweed drain an area traditionally known as "dale." This region was confined to the south and east by the Yarrow/Tweed watershed and to the north and east by the Gala Water/Tweed watershed, since the territory was thought to stop before the Yarrow Water spilled into the Tweed.

Located between Broughton and Peebles, the Upper Tweeddale National Scenic Area encompasses 12,770 hectares of land and is one of Scotland's 40 designated National Scenic Areas. These areas are designated to identify areas of exceptional scenery and to safeguard them from inappropriate development.

History of Tweeddale

Similarly to Teviotdale and the Marches to the east, Liddesdale and Annandale to the south, Clydesdale to the west, and Lothian to the north, Tweeddale was an ancient Scottish district. It's located in what used to be Peeblesshire.

Both the northern County of Peebles and the southern County of Selkirk, also known as the "Ettrick Forest," originated from the area once occupied by the Sheriffdoms of Peebles and Selkirk.

As part of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889, many of Scotland's counties were formally reorganized. The Act created a standardized system of county councils and town councils throughout the country.
