Man Arrested for Headbutting Police Van Light in Incident

In Blackburn magistrates’ court, a peculiar case unfolded involving Nathan Grimshaw, who found himself charged with criminal damage after an incident in the back of a police van. The saga began with an alleged domestic incident that led to Grimshaw’s arrest, but ultimately, no charges were pressed in relation to that matter. However, what followed was unexpected: Grimshaw, in a fit of frustration, headbutted a light in the police van, causing £100 worth of damage.

During the proceedings, Grimshaw, a 28-year-old resident of Gannow Lane in Burnley, pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal damage to a light belonging to Lancashire Constabulary. Despite the lack of charges stemming from the original arrest, Grimshaw found himself facing consequences for the damage inflicted on the police property.

In court, the prosecution, represented by Naseema Patel, outlined the sequence of events, highlighting how the initial domestic incident did not result in any further legal action against Grimshaw. However, the act of damaging the light in the police van led to the criminal damage charge.

In his defense, Grimshaw’s solicitor, Aftab Bakhat, shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident. He explained that Grimshaw’s actions were driven by sheer frustration, emphasizing that his client believed he had done nothing wrong—a belief seemingly supported by the absence of additional charges related to the initial arrest.

Despite the mitigating circumstances presented by his defense, Grimshaw received a conditional discharge for 12 months from the magistrates. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £100 in compensation for the damage caused to the police light. The outcome underscored the importance of handling frustration in a constructive manner and the repercussions of actions even in the absence of formal charges.
