About North Ayrshire

North Ayrshire

Of Scotland's 32 council areas, North Ayrshire is one of them. The council area encompasses the northern portion of the historic county of Ayrshire and the islands that make up Buteshire, and it is located in the west central Lowlands, to the west of the Firth of Clyde. Roughly 135,280 people call this place home. Its main cities are Irvine and Kilwinning.

The area is bounded to the north by Inverclyde, to the northeast by Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, and to the south by East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire. North Ayrshire Council, which was established in 1997, has boundaries that are very close to those of the Cunninghame district.

History and formation

In 1996, the area replaced the previous district of Cunninghame. Irvine, the largest town, is home to the council's main offices. In addition to the island of Arran and the larger and smaller Cumbrae, the region also includes the towns of Ardrossan, Beith, Dalry, Kilbirnie, Kilwinning, Largs, Saltcoats, Skelmorlie, Stevenston, and West Kilbride. Despite accounting for nearly half of the council area's land area, the Isle of Arran is only home to about 4% of its residents. Rural North Ayrshire is well-known for its scenic landscapes, shorelines, beaches, and landmarks.

Skelmorlie, Largs, Fairlie, and West Kilbride, all to the north, are prosperous commuter towns that also happen to be on the coast and, as a result, draw a lot of visitors during the warm summer months. Southern cities include Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston. Kilwinning and Irvine, the area's main settlement and largest town, are located in the southern part of the region. There used to be major steel mills in the inland communities of Dalry, Kilbirnie, and Beith, but those buildings no longer stand. Arran and Cumbrae rely heavily on tourism, but the latter has seen locals priced out of the housing market due to the proliferation of vacation homes. Ardrossan Harbour and Irvine's downtown area are undergoing revitalization, and the number of new homes being built in the area has exploded in recent years.

Patrick Robin Archibald Boyle, the tenth Earl of Glasgow, lives in Kelburn Castle in Fairlie. Since the 1100s, the Boyle family has owned the property. The Graffiti Project completely redesigned the castle in 2007.

Economy

North Ayrshire's unemployment rate is slightly higher than the rest of Scotland's. In September 2020, North Ayrshire unveiled its Economic Recovery and Renewal Strategy, an all-encompassing blueprint for the county's inclusive and environmentally friendly economic revival. Green New Deal components that will rely heavily on an £8.8 million Investment Fund include:

  • By utilizing the municipality's land and resources to their full potential, renewable energy generation can be maximized.
  • Establishing a Green Jobs Fund to help North Ayrshire make a fair transition;
  • Increasing the commercial property's sustainability through investment;
  • Addressing urban blight by cleaning up abandoned lots and structures;
  • Contributing to local economic growth in a variety of ways, including revitalization and local control.
  • Carbon sequestration initiatives involving tree planting

North Ayrshire Council established a new economic model in May 2020, becoming the first council in Scotland to become a Community Wealth Building (CWB) Council. By establishing an economy that benefits locals, visitors, and the environment, North Ayrshire Council hopes to aid in the region's revival and revitalization.

With this new North Ayrshire approach, a £660,000 Community Wealth Building Business Fund will be established to aid local businesses in a variety of ways, including: supporting local supply chains, fair employment, digital adoption, and the transition to a green economy; fostering the growth of co-ops, employee ownership, and social enterprises; and more. The Ayrshire Growth Deal, a joint initiative of the Scottish and United Kingdom governments, is intended to improve the local economy in North Ayrshire. Supporting economic recovery in North Ayrshire with a bold and ambitious investment program to create and secure jobs is a major focus of the £250 million Ayrshire Growth Deal.

Towns and villages

Irvine, a new town on the coast of the Firth of Clyde, is the county seat of North Ayrshire and its largest settlement, with a population of 33,698.

Kilwinning, with a population of over 18,000, is the largest settlement in terms of people. Largs and the "Three Towns" of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston are also significant population hubs in the region.

Lamlash is the largest of the Isle of Arran's villages, but there are many others. Millport is the only settlement on the island of Great Cumbrae.
