About Bushmills
Description of Bushmills
Northern Ireland's County Antrim is home to the little fishing community of Bushmills (Irish: Muileann na Buaise). The 2011 Census found that there were 1,295 people living in Bushmills. It is 97 kilometers from Belfast, 14 km from Ballycastle, and 9 km from Coleraine. The settlement was named after the nearby River Bush, where a sizable watermill was constructed in the early 17th century. Irish whiskey is made in the nearby Old Bushmills Distillery, and the area is also close to the famous Giant's Causeway.
The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency classifies Bushmills as a hamlet (with a population between 1,000 and 2,499). Bushmills had a population of 1,295 as of Census Day, March 27th, 2011. Of these, there are three.
The Old Bushmills Distillery is the most recognizable landmark in the area. The distillery produces the 10-, 12-, 16-, and 21-year-old Bushmills Single Malts, as well as the Original and Black Bush mixes. The distillery marked the 400th anniversary of the beginning of distilling in the region by releasing a special whiskey made with crystal malt and dubbed the "1608." Water for the distillery comes from Saint Columbs Rill, a tributary of the River Bush. Just 3.2 kilometers (2.0 miles) to the north of town is the Giant's Causeway, which is visited by over two million people every year.
Bushmills's train station first established on January 28, 1883, and it remained operating until October 1, 1949. From Bushmills in the summer, you can take a narrow-gauge steam train to the Giant's Causeway. Northern Ireland Railways operates a train line between Belfast and Derry, with stops in Coleraine and a branch line leading to Portrush. There are connections to the train terminals with local Ulsterbus. From Portrush, you may take in the sights of Dunluce Castle, the Giant's Causeway, and the Bushmills Railway on a pleasant 7-mile stroll.
