About Newtownabbey
Description of Newtownabbey
Town and former district (1973-2015) in what was then the county of Antrim and is now part of the Antrim and Newtownabbey region in eastern Northern Ireland; Irish: Baile na Mainistreach. Newtownabbey is a residential continuation of Belfast along the banks of Belfast Lough. It was founded in 1958 when seven communities merged (inlet of the sea).
East and north belonged to the historic districts of Larne and Carrickfergus, while to the west was Antrim and to the south was Ballymena. To the south is where you'll find Belfast City. Most of the Newtownabbey district was flat to undulating lowland, though the southern slopes of the Antrim Mountains extended into the north and east. Ballyclare is located in a broad valley 7 miles (11 km) north of Newtownabbey town, and it serves as a hub for the area's light agricultural industry.
History of Newtownabbey
On April 1, 1958, the area north of Belfast known as Carnmoney, Glengormley, Jordanstown, Monkstown, Whiteabbey, Whitehouse, and Whitewell became part of the Newtownabbey Urban District.
Previous to this, the area was under the control of the Belfast Rural District.
In its place, the Newtownabbey Urban District Council was superseded by the Newtownabbey District Council (1973–1977), the Newtownabbey Borough Council (1977–2015), and the Antrim and Newtownabbey District Council (2015).

In Northern Ireland, Rathcoole F.C. represents in the Ballymena & Provincial Football League. There was a Belfast Deaf United Football Club team in the Down Area Winter Football League by 2020.
St. Enda's Gaelic Athletic Club (located in nearby Glengormley) and Greencastle Wolfe Tones Gaelic Athletic Club (both founded in the 1930s) are two of the local Gaelic sports clubs (based at Greencastle). The Antrim County Board hosts competitions for both teams.
