Tourist Attractions

Movilla Abbey

Movilla Cemetery is the site of the historic monastic settlement's ruins, known as Movilla Abbey. Finnian's old Celtic Abbey no longer stands, but the Augustinian ruins from the 15th century are well worth a visit. There are many of these along the St. Patrick's Trail.

Scrabo Tower

The Scrabo Tower, which stands at a lofty 100 feet (30 meters), looks down on the village of Newtownards below. The monument tower, which stands on Scrabo Hill at an impressive 41 meters in height, was built in 1857 to honor Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Those who were faithful to the Stewarts speculated that the inspiration came from the gratitude of his tenantry for his care during the famine. It's hard to believe this, considering the widespread disapproval of the Marquess throughout his lifetime. During 1847, he and his wife gave £20 and £10, respectively, to their communities' respective relief funds. They spent £15,000 remodeling their Mount Stewart house the next year. There were 1,200 tenant farmers and many other employees on the estate, but only 450 people had internet access. Ninety-eight contributors (led by Napoleon III of France) paid for around two-thirds of the total.

The tower, which was built in the style of a Scottish baronial manor, now houses a museum dedicated to the study of local history and the natural environment. Scrabo, a prominent basalt-capped sandstone hill in north Down. Scrabo Country Park, which includes the parkland and woodland paths of Killynether Wood, is now home to the tower.

Mount Stewart

Mount Stewart, a house and garden dating back to the 18th century and owned by the Londonderry family, is located on the eastern shore of Strangford Lough, just outside of Newtownards and close to Greyabbey. The Londonderrys were influential members of British society and politics, and their legacy is reflected in the house and its furnishings. Mount Stewart's 98-acre garden is being considered for World Heritage status by UNESCO.

Somme Heritage Centre

The Somme Heritage Centre, found just north of the city, is the association's crowning achievement. The complex, located next to the Clandeboye Estate near Newtownards, is a one-of-a-kind tourist destination of international significance, showcasing the realities of the Great War and its consequences on the population back home. Displays and information on the entire Irish contribution to the First World War can be found at this memorial to the 36th (Ulster) and 16th (Irish) divisions' participation in the Battle of the Somme and the 10th (Irish) Division's participation in Gallipoli, Salonika, and Palestine.
