Parbold, England

The settlement and civil parish of Parbold are located in West Lancashire, England. Parbold first appears on record in the late 12th century, when land was granted to the neighboring Burscough Priory.

At some point after the Norman invasion, Parbold became a part of the Manchester Barony. From this point until the middle of the 18th century, there was hardly any progress. In 1894, Parbold was recognized as a civil parish. A few coal mines exploited the sparse deposits of coal in the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, and hard sandstone was also mined. It was possible to ship coal and sandstone out of Parbold via the rivers, and boat construction was a secondary industry at the time.  The water cornmill on Alder Lane was replaced with the original windmill close to the canal, and it was in service there until 1985. During the middle of the nineteenth century, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway constructed a train station in Parbold, transforming the village and making it more accessible to middle-class employees who could then travel to larger cities in the region. There has been a direct hourly service to Manchester Airport railway station for the past few years, allowing for speedy access to aircraft departing from Manchester Airport (less than 1 hour and 15 minutes' travel time). The train station served as, and continues to serve as, the focal point of the community. Near the peak of Parbold Hill is the local Anglican church, Christ Church, where a memorial to the town's fallen soldiers can be found (see References). The other church in the community, Our Lady and All Saints, was dedicated by Bishop Robert Cornthwaite on May 28, 1884.

There are two churches, two elementary schools, a nursery, a library that opened in 1989, a cinema and community center housed in a specially constructed village hall, a telephone exchange, a doctor's office, a sub post office, and a variety of other businesses, including a pharmacy, a newsstand, an estate agent, three hair salons, Chinese and Indian takeout, and a greengrocery. The Windmill and the Stocks Tavern are two of the village's watering holes that are on the main drag. In addition to the Wayfarer: Brew Pub and Dining Rooms, which serves both Al a Carte and Italian fare, there is also a Miller & Carter Steakhouse. The town windmill, constructed in 1794, has served as James Bartholomew's gallery from roughly 1850.

Former amateur football club Parbold FC competes in the South Lancashire Counties League. In 2005–2006, they won the title of Division 3 champions, and the next season, they finished as runners-up in Division 2. Since Parbold won Division 1 in 2009–10, they have been promoted to the Premier League. The team has been based in Ormskirk since 2008, but its name honors the community from which it originated.

Skelmersdale United (Northern Premier League Division One North) and Burscough FC are two semi-professional teams that play in the area (Conference North). The Alder Lane Playing Fields are used by the Shevington Sharks ARLFC for their younger teams' practices and games.
