Description of Wrightington Ward
With a total size of 3,91512 acres, Wrightington is a civil parish in West Lancashire, England. The land rises to more than 400 feet in Harrock, on the boundary of Parbold, before falling away to the north, northeast, and southeast. The River Douglas forms part of the southern boundary at Appley Bridge. To the north of here is where you'll find Wrightington Hall. Towards the north of the park are the neighborhoods of Tunley and Broadhurst, while toward the west of Harrock is the neighborhood of Fairhurst, which extends all the way down to the Douglas River. Wrightington had a population of 4,055 at the time of the 2001 census but has decreased to 2,886 as of the 2011 count.
Farms and stables can be found throughout the rural area of Wrightington. Agriculture consists of a wide variety of businesses, including dairies, sheep farms, fish farms, and stables.
Ainscough Crane Hire was founded in 1976, and it has since expanded via mergers and acquisitions to become the largest crane hire business in the UK.
History of Wrightington
Boar's Den, which is presumed to be a Bronze Age circular barrow, is a relatively undisturbed earth and stone mound measuring 73 yards (66.5m) (E/W) by 68 yards (62m) (N/S) with a maximum height of 8 feet (2.5m) that had some plough damage in the past and is now used solely as grazing ground. Despite its size, this circular barrow might be easily overlooked without a map, as it could be taken for a bump in the center of the field.
Prior to the construction of St. Joseph's Church in 1892 by Charles Clifton Dicconson, Fairhurst Hall served as a place of worship for Roman Catholics. A priest had been resident at Wrightington Hall since the 1680s, and a private chapel dedicated to St. Joseph was provided for the family, tenantry, and employees.
Parish Council
Wrightington has a parish council which consists of two wards, Mossy Lea and Appley Bridge each represented by three councillors. Hilldale, formerly a ward of Wrightington, became a separate civil parish in 1999.
