Description of Silverdale, Lancashire

Located in the City of Lancaster area of Lancashire, England, Silverdale is both a village and a civil parish. The village is located on Morecambe Bay, 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) north-west of Carnforth, and 8.5 kilometers (14 miles) south-east of Lancaster. In 2011, the parish's population was recorded at 1,519.

You can find Silverdale in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Leighton Moss, a natural reserve maintained by the RSPB, is located not far from the town's train station. Several parcels of property nearby are owned by the National Trust. The Trowbarrow quarry, formerly owned by Tarmac, is now an SSSI and a popular climbing destination. Footpaths in both Lancashire and Cumbria go down the coast from Silverdale to Freckleton and Gretna, respectively.

Geographical Description of Silverdale

The Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty includes Silverdale (AONB). Eaves Wood, Gait Barrows, Hawes Water (not to be confused with Haweswater reservoir in Cumbria), Jack Scout, Leighton Moss, Silverdale Golf Course, and Trowbarrow Quarry, and the entire Morecambe Bay are all Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) within the parish.

Culture of Silverdale

In the heart of the hamlet, the Gaskell Memorial Hall plays host to a variety of events. The Silverdale Handbell Ringers (established in 1906, formerly the Silverdale Church Handbell Ringers) provide holiday entertainment, and the Silverdale Village Players put on a Pantomime and other productions every year. Silverdale is not in Westmorland, but the town still has a Women's Institute that is part of the "Cumbria-Westmorland" Federation of Women's Institutes. The Silverdale Village Institute is a charitable organization that opened its doors and its field to the community in 1929. A proposal for a skatepark on the field was shot down in 2013 by its committee. At the well-attended 2014 AGM, youngsters in the village held a silent protest in favor of a skate park, and there was a significant shakeup in the composition of the governing body.  Every year throughout the summer, the two towns of Silverdale and Arnside host the Art and Craft Trail, when both resident and visiting artists exhibit their wares in various locations around town.

Disputes arose in February 2012 about the use of the bar and its gardens as the basis for a residential development at The Royal Hotel, a famous establishment in the heart of Silverdale. Because of public backlash, the proposal was scrapped. After receiving approval from Lancaster City Council's planning committee on revised designs, the Royal Hotel reopened to the public in April 2016.
