About Southampton
Description of Southampton
South of London, in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, is the English port city of Southampton. About 110 kilometers south-west of London and 24 kilometers west of Portsmouth, it is easily accessible. Portsmouth with the surrounding communities of Havant, Waterlooville, Eastleigh, Fareham, and Gosport make comprise what is known as the South Hampshire urban area, which includes the city of Gosport.
Southampton is a significant port and a popular tourist destination because of its proximity to the New Forest and its location at the head of Southampton Water, where the Rivers Test and Itchen meet and the River Hamble flows in from the south.
Both the Mayflower and the Spitfire have strong ties to Southampton because the plane was constructed there and the ship left from there before being forced to return to Plymouth. Once one of Europe's most important ports for ocean liners, Southampton is today famous as the home port of some of the world's largest cruise ships. From New York, the Cunard Line operates a consistent transatlantic service to London. When it comes to shopping in the South of England, Southampton is a major hub.
Geographical description of Southampton
Ocean and river features significantly shape Southampton's landscape. The city is situated on the northernmost tip of Southampton Water, a deep-water estuary developed as a ria at the close of the last Ice Age. The confluence of the Test and Itchen rivers can be found here. The Test, which features a salt marsh that is perfect for salmon fishing, runs along the western boundary of the city, while the Itchen divides Southampton in half along the same axis. Between the two rivers is where the heart of the city is.
The first public wharf, known as Town Quay, was built in the 13th century. In the 1830s, the mud flats between the Itchen and Test estuaries were filled in to construct the modern-day Eastern Docks. In the 1930s, the Southern Railway Company initiated a massive land reclamation and dredging effort, which resulted in the Western Docks. Most of the fill used in the reclamation project was dredged from Southampton Water so that the port can continue to accommodate huge ships. The double high tide, with its two high tide peaks, is a great boon for the transportation of huge vessels on the water. Popular belief to the contrary, this is due to the English Channel's unique shape and depth rather than the presence of the Isle of Wight. Local factors that extend to France disrupt the overall water flow in this region.
Economy of Southanpton
Southampton had a lower employment rate than the rest of the country in 2016–17, with 71.4% of its working-age population holding down a job, compared to the national average of 74.4%. The unemployment rate was at 6.6%, or 5% of the working-age population.
While the national percentage of economic inactivity was 21.8% in 2016–17, 24.8% of the city's resident population aged 16–64 was classified as economically inactive. However, the reason for this status was education for more than 40% of this group.
Only slightly more than a quarter of the city's job openings are in the education and health sectors. Retail and wholesale trade make up the third largest sector at 16.2%, followed by real estate and other businesses at 19.0%. The employment rate in Southampton grew by 18.5% between 1995 and 2004.
Southampton has three major downtown revitalization projects in progress at the moment. Over 500 new homes, new retail and hospitality venues, and a new linear park running alongside the medieval town walls are all part of the £132 million Bargate Quarter scheme, which began construction in February 2022 on the site of the former Bargate Centre and is expected to be finished by late 2024. Across from Southampton Central Railway Station, the former Toys R Us location off Western Esplanade will be demolished and replaced with a £200 million redevelopment scheme. There will be 600 new houses and new business space in the Maritime Gateway development, which spans 4.8 acres (1.9 hectares). It replaced the former Leisure World, which had been open since 1997 and was located near the water. The new Leisure World spans over 13 acres (5.3 ha). The first phase of the £280 million project is planned to be finished by 2024/25, and it will include the construction of 650 new dwellings, two hotels, a cinema, a casino, and a number of food service outlets, with the first phase expected to complete by 2024/25.
