About Adlington
Description of Adlington, Lancashire
Located about three miles south of Chorley, Adlington is a village and civil parish in Lancashire, England, close to the West Pennine Moors. In 1842, it was established as a parish, and by the 1870s, the town had grown around the textile and coal mining industries. As of the 2001 census, the population was 5,270, but that number has increased by over 2,000 to 7,326 in the intervening years. As of the 2011 Census, the counted population was 6,010. White Bear Marina, the largest marina on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, is located within the village on the canal's northern end.
Geography of Adlington
Adlington is located in the northeastern part of the township, and it covers an area of 1,064 acres. The River Douglas forms the township's south-eastern border, while Buckow Brook divides it from Worthington to the west. The Ellerbeck River separates Ellerbe from Duxbury.
Economy of Adlington
Adlington's economy used to be based on cotton mills and coal pits, but nowadays the town mainly serves as a residential settlement for commuters going to work in nearby cities like Manchester, Bolton, Wigan, and Chorley. Leonard Fairclough & Son, a construction company that was once headquartered there but is now part of the AMEC group, was established there.
Governance
Adlington was a township in the clerical parish of Standish in the Lancashire hundred of Leyland in the Middle Ages. Adlington and the surrounding townships (or civil parishes) formed the Chorley Poor Law Union in 1837 to administer and fund the Poor Law in the region. In 1872, a local board was established, but by 1894, it had been replaced by a twelve-person council for the urban district. Chorley Borough, of which Chorley is a part, has its administrative offices in the town centre. Locally, the Adlington and Anderton ward has sent three Labour Party council members to represent the town. Lindsay Hoyle, a Labour Party member, was elected as Chorley's MP in the 2010 General Election, and the town of Adlington is included in that constituency.
