About Coppull
Description of Coppull
The English county of Lancashire is home to the settlement and civil parish of Coppull. Approximately 300 feet (91 meters) above sea level, it is located inside Chorley Borough. In the most recent count, taken in 2011, there were 7,959 people living there. Whittle Brook, Clancutt Brook, the River Yarrow, Eller Brook, Hic-Bibi Brook, and Stars Brook form its borders. Coppull, Greater Manchester, may be found between Chorley and Standish, to the east of the A49 near Charnock Richard.
History of Coppull
Chorley and District Historical and Archaeological Society excavated a site on Coppull Moor in 1959 and 1985, and they found evidence that suggests a Roman route between Wigan and Walton-le-Dale may have crossed the moorland at that time.
The Old English copp a hill top and hyll a hill provide the etymological basis for the Anglo Saxon name for the town.
In 1277, it was called Cophull and Cophulle; in 1351, Copphull; in 1374, Copthull; and beginning in 1444, it was called Coppull. A family of that name held Chisnall. There are two references to Roger and John de Chisnall, in 1277 and 1292. In 1347, Roger de Chisnall gave him, his brother Robert, and his cousins John and Thomas ownership of land and goods. Upon his death in 1525, John Chisnall left the Earl of Derby with land and property in Coppull and Worthington. Between 1688 and 1689, Richard Worthington served as the MP for Wigan, and in 1690, he represented Preston as a Tory. The Worthingtons, who owned Blainscough until after the Civil War, vacated the property.
Governance
Located in the Hundred of Leyland, the parish of St. Wilfrid, Standish, was the township of Coppull. Chorley Poor Law Union, of which it was a part, assumed control of the Poor Law's administration and funding in 1837. From 1875 to 1894, Coppull was included in the Chorley Rural Sanitary District, and from 1894 to 1974, it was included in the Chorley Rural District. The area has been a civil parish and electoral ward in the Chorley Borough since 1974.
