Description of Brindle and Hoghton Ward
Located in Chorley Borough, Lancashire, England, Hoghton is both a tiny village and a civil parish. There were 802 people living there as of the 2011 census. Brindle Parish is a part of the Brindle and Hoghton ward.
In the 12th century, the de Hoghton family settled in what is now known as Hoghton Tower, a fortified manor house.
The unincorporated communities of Riley Green and Hoghton Bottoms are also part of the parish. The settlements of Gregson Lane and Coupe Green, occasionally included in descriptions of Hoghton, actually lie outside the parish in the South Ribble area, where they make up the ward of Coupe Green and Gregson Lane.
Two Hoghton poachers, according to legend, once robbed a fairy-held rabbit warren. They panicked when they realized the voices coming from their sacks were actually those of fairies.
In addition to the Sirloin, which is said to be haunted, the village also has the Boar's Head, which is said to have been one of the last places the Pendle Witches slept the night before their trials and executions in Lancaster in 1612.
