About Farington
Description of Farington
Located in the South Ribble district of Lancashire, England, Farington is both a village and a civil parish. According to the most recent census (2011), the civil parish was home to 6,674 people.
History of Farington
From its inception in 1894 until its dissolution in 1974, the parish was a part of Preston Rural District. This parish was annexed by South Ribble in 1974.
Between the years of 1838 and 1960, the residents of Farington were well-served by the train station.
Governance
Located in the heart of South Ribble, the Central area includes Farington, Lostock Hall, and Tardy Gate. Until the general election of 2010, it was also a part of the South Ribble parliamentary constituency. The Boundary Commission, however, recommended including the territory in the Ribble Valley constituency, so that's where it ended up. Farington, Farington Moss, and portions of Lostock Hall and Whitestake are all part of the parish. Farington and Moss Side are both included in the Farington electoral division for Lancashire County Council.
Geographical description of Farington
North of Leyland, the community of Farington features rural and suburban neighbourhoods, as well as the Leyland Trucks headquarters and assembly plant.
Farington has always had a close relationship with Leyland, but it is not a subsidiary of Leyland. The main shopping and commuter corridor is Stanifield Lane, which passes through the heart of the village on its way to Leyland. Farington is home to a sizable Catholic community, so the town also has a convent for their nuns. It has been said that Farington Park is where football in South Ribble was born.
Farington Household Waste Recycling Centre is South Ribble's primary landfill.
Economy of Farington
As the home of Leyland Trucks' headquarters and manufacturing facility, Farington is an important economic hub. Located here is the Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust's main office. When its lease in Farington expired in 2014, Enterprise plc, a provider of support services to the public sector and utility companies, merged with Amey plc and moved its headquarters there. There aren't many places to shop in Farington itself, but nearby shopping centres and the town of Leyland provide ample options.
