About Mere Brow
Description of Mere Brow, England
Between Tarleton and Banks, on the A565, you'll find the small English village of Mere Brow. It's located roughly 10 km south-west of Preston and 6 km east of Southport. Both the West Lancashire Borough Council and the Tarleton parish council are responsible for its upkeep. Its parliamentary district is that of West Lancashire. Mere Brow is the largest of the parish of Tarleton's villages, after Tarleton itself, and smaller than Holmes and Sollom.
History of Mere Brow
Mere Brow and Holmes, a nearby village, were once a part of North Meols' parish but are now a part of Tarleton's. It is thought that Mere Brow got its name back when it was Martin Mere's northernmost settlement.
Established in 1847 as a free public school, Mere Brow Church of England Primary School is one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom.
The Reverend Master was given land by George Anthony Legh Keck called "the Warth" to construct a school and a school house for the less fortunate residents of Tarleton. The school, which is connected to Tarleton's Holy Trinity Church, has grown to accommodate the community's rising demand.
Economy of Mere Brow
Thanks to its fertile soil, the settlement of Mere Brow was predominantly an agricultural center, while fishing was a significant industry for a considerable period of time. Many of the farms in the area cultivate both flowers and vegetables for local consumption. The villagers can patronize the tavern known as the Legh Arms (so named for the family that once owned Bank Hall), the cafe, the smithy, the village hall, the general store known as Ascroft's, or the livery yard. The leisure lakes have a nine-hole golf course, a driving range, a caravan park, an equestrian center, a paintball arena, a watersports facility, and an angling center. When the two gas stations on the A565 route through the town closed, one of them reopened as a carwash in 2002. Since its closure in 2008, the town of Banks has served as the area's only remaining postal service. However, this location just closed as well, thus the closest one is now in a Spar supermarket in Tarleton (ironically slightly nearer). Midway through the 1990s, the bank failed and the building was converted into apartments.
