About Lea

Lea, Lancashire

Preston, Lancashire, England is home to several small settlements, including Lea, Cottam, and Lea Town. There are 5,962 people who live in the Lea civil parish as a whole.

The area is part of the Fylde constituency and is a component of the electoral ward with Preston, which is represented by three councillors.

History

On April 1, 1934, a portion of the parish of Lea Ashton Ingol and Cottam, which had been established in 1866, was separated to become the parish of Lea.

Before its dissolution in 1974, Lea parish was a part of Preston Rural District. the parish was annexed by the Borough of Preston in 1974, and Preston later became a city in 2002.

Lea and Cottam Parish Council is the local governing body. Formerly an agricultural village, Cottam is now nearly entirely made up of brand new construction.

Two other Preston neighborhoods have the name Lea: Lea Town (a hamlet, despite its name) on the Fylde border (population: 291 in 2011) and the Lea suburbs that stretch along Preston's Blackpool Road.

During the Middle Ages, the area now known as Lea Town was known as English Lea and French Lea due to the presence of a Norman landowner.

Over 83% of residents identified as Christians in the 2001 census, with the percentage of retirees being one of the highest in the city at 11.5%.

Lea is home to a number of different places of worship, including the Methodist Church and St. Christopher's.
