About Croston
Description of Croston
Croston is a small settlement and civil parish in Lancashire, England, not far from Chorley. The settlement is situated along the Yarrow River. The 2011 census counted 2,917 people living in the civil parish.
History of Croston
In the seventh century, when St. Aidan visited the communities along the river, Croston was established. When a church wasn't available, a cross was built in its stead. The name is distinctive to the town since it combines two Old English words: "cross" and "tn" (town/homestead/village).
The size of the parish of Croston used to be much bigger than it is now. It covered the areas of Chorley, Much Hoole, Rufford, Bretherton, Mawdesley, Tarleton, Hesketh Bank, Bispham, Walmer Bridge, and Ulnes Walton. Between 1642 and 1821, a number of splits resulted in the formation of these separate parishes. The annual medieval fair and market on the village green dates back to 1283, when Edward I authorized its establishment with a charter. There is no indication of a stone edifice, yet pre-20th-century maps also portray a castle.
There is a sister city relationship between Croston and Azay le Rideau, a little town to the southwest of Tours in France.
Azay is a hotspot for tourists since it is home to a French Renaissance chateau—one of the illustrious chateaux of the Loire.
Landmarks
The De Trafford family erected Croston Hall as the village's manor residence. Since the hall's demolition in the 1960s, a new country home has been constructed on the site. Members of the family were devout Roman Catholics, so in 1857 they commissioned architect Edward Welby Pugin to create a private chapel on the property. The modest structure was built out of rock-faced sandstone and features an eclectic Gothic design. When the last De Trafford died in the 1960s, he gave his estate to the residents of Croston.
Before its recent renovation, Croston's police station was a massive brick building. In the 1970s, it was replaced by a smaller police station, which has also since closed.
