The village and civil parish of Grimsargh are located within the urban area of Preston, Lancashire, England. location east of Preston, 5.9 kilometers away.
History of Grimsargh
Old Norse Grmr is considered to be the source of the name Grimsargh, which was then combined with the Norse erg to form the modern name. Grimesarge, "in the temple of Grimr," is where one source claims it originated, which the Domesday Book attributes to the place (a name for Odin)
On April 1, 1934, the parish was established by merging the 1866-established parish of Elston with half of the 1866-established parish of Grimsargh-with-Brockholes.
Prior to 1974, when the rural district was abolished, the parish belonged to it, and from there to the considerably larger Amounderness hundred, of which Preston was a part. The parish was annexed by the Borough of Preston in 1974; in 2002, the Borough of Preston was elevated to the status of City of Preston.
Demography
The population of the parish increased from 2,164 in the 2001 census to 2,653 in the 2011 census.
Governance
The Village is included in the Wyre and Preston North constituency. In the years before 2010, the community of Grimsargh was included in the Lancaster and Wyre constituency, which was originally represented by Labour Party MP Hilton Dawson and then, beginning in 2005, by Conservative MP Ben Wallace. Following boundary changes for the 2010 general election, Ben Wallace, a member of the Conservative Party, was elected to represent the newly formed Wyre and Preston North constituency, which included both Lancaster and Wyre and the western portions of the now-defunct Blackpool North and Fleetwood constituencies.
Preston Rural East, of which the parish is a part, elects two councilmembers, both of whom are Conservative at the moment. Preston Rural East is a parished ward, meaning that it contains parish councils with their own organizational structure and elected councillors. Preston Rural East include the parishes of Grimsargh, Haighton, and Broughton-in-Amounderness. There are nine council members and a clerk on the Grimsargh parish council.
