Description of Arkholme-with-Cawood
The City of Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire includes the civil parish of Arkholme-with-Cawood. In 2001, 334 people were counted as living in the parish of Arkholme-with-Cawood; this number decreased slightly to 333 in 2011. Location: on the B6254, to the north-east of Lancaster.
History
Like Melling and Whittington, the small settlement of Arkholme can be found in the Lune Valley, where it is one of few that show signs of having once been motte-and-bailey castles. As far as we can tell, no bailey remains in Arkholme. Besides the area along the Welsh border, this is where you'll find the greatest concentration of Norman castles.
The Furness and Midland Joint Railway line provided service there until 1960. Between Wennington (where it met the Midland Railway) and Melling (the next stop), a tunnel carried passengers; the following stop was Arkholme.
Thankful Village
Arkholme is one of Lancashire's two "Thankful Villages," or communities that experienced zero fatalities between 1914 and 1918. At 59, this tiny town's military enlistment was the highest of any single parish or community. It's incredible that all 59 people went back to their regular lives. Nether Kellet, located 5 miles to the south-west, also sent 21 men and is a Thankful Village since all of its men came back.
The BBC reported that Arkholme and Nether Kellet were also considered "Thankful Villages" because neither community had any casualties in either World War.
Located in Arkholme, Lancashire, Mason Gillibrand Architects' 2004-completed Arkholme Village Hall was honored with a 2005 RICS Community Benefit Award for its innovative design.
