Located at the north-eastern tip of Morecambe Bay, in the City of Lancaster in Lancashire, England, is the market town and civil parish of Carnforth. There were 5,560 people living in the parish of Carnforth as of the 2011 census, up from 5,350 in the 2001 count. Approximately 7 miles separate the city from Lancaster, 17 miles put it to the south of Kendal, 40 miles put it to the east of Barrow-in-Furness (with Morecambe Bay in the middle), and 28 miles put it to the northwest of Settle. The county borders of Cumbria and Lancashire are also not far from the town.

The railroad and ironworks contributed to Carnforth's expansion in the nineteenth century. Carnforth is a popular starting point for hikers and cyclists because of its proximity to both the coast and the hills. The town is situated along the routes of the River Keer, the West Coast Main Line (WCML), the A6, and the Lancaster Canal. The A601 connects Carnforth with the M6 motorway, which passes just to the east (M).

Geographical description of Carnforth

Carnforth is located on the A6 road, west of the M6 motorway, and 11 kilometres (km) north of Lancaster, Lancashire.

The town's north-northwest corner is defined by the River Keer, whose mouth empties into Morecambe Bay. Separating Carnforth and Warton, it acts as a parish boundary. The river is crossed by a road bridge between Carnforth and Millhead, with a footbridge located a short distance downstream.

Transport

Buses travel south to Lancaster and Morecambe from Carnforth, which is located on the A6 road, and north to Milnthorpe, Kendal, and Keswick. The 555 bus is one of the longest and most scenic bus routes in England. Carnforth has access to the A601(M) and the B6254 from junction 35 of the M6, which runs east of the city.

Carnforth Railway Station is on the West Coast Main Line that connects London and Scotland, but no trains stop there. Passengers must go to either Lancaster or Oxenhoime, located to the south and north, respectively, to make connections to the West Coast Main Line. Both the Leeds-Morecambe and the Furness lines are serviced by trains departing from Carnforth.

Carnforth is located on the Lancaster Canal and features a marina for recreational boaters. The canal was once navigable from Lancaster to Kendal, but beyond Tewitfield, north of Carnforth, it is now closed to the public.

Carnforth is crossed by the River Keer on a footbridge in the north-west corner of the city, and the Lancashire Coastal Way and the Bay Cycle Way both run along its western outskirts.
