About Ellel
Ellel, Lancashire
The village of Ellel and its associated civil parish are located inside Lancaster, the county seat of Lancashire, England. The population increased from 2,521 in 2001 to 4,895 in 2011. Bay Horse, Galgate, and Hampson Green, as well as a portion of Dolphinholme, are all considered to be part of the parish.
The Church of St. Mary, erected on the Ellel Grange estate by W. & G. Audsley in 1873, is now abandoned. St. John's Church, which has been in its current location in Ellel since 1907, is the Anglican church that serves the community.
Thomas Lamb constructed Hay Carr, a country mansion on the outskirts of Ellel, and it was afterwards acquired by the Sandeman Port family.
The Ellel village hall was formerly the Institute on Stoney Lane beside the Galgate traffic lights, which was greatly loved but eventually outgrew its capacity to serve the growing population.
It was too small, there was nowhere to park, and the ancient, drafty building was impossible to heat. A meeting was convened in January 2004 to form a group to acquire a new community center for the hamlet. It was a lengthy and arduous eight years of struggle to accomplish this.
Every resident of the village chipped in to make a difference. Community Futures in Preston was a great resource for us when we applied for National Lottery and other awards. They conducted a feasibility study and explored many possibilities. In 2005, residents of the Ellel council ward were consulted on a parish plan, and 64 percent of those who were asked participated. There was nearly unanimous approval for building a new community center.
They were able to raise £270,000 for the community rooms at Galgate Recreation because of the success of the village hall project.
The total funding is now £920,000, thanks to the sale of the previous Institute and other funds, plus the £500,000 we won in the lottery.
The construction of the new hall on the Galgate Recreation Field began in the middle of 2011, and it was finished in March of 2012. In August of 2012, after having work parties to paint the interior, the hall was opened for public use.
The community has benefited much from the hall ever since, and it has only become better as time has gone on.
The village hall in Galgate is more than just a structure; it symbolizes the strength of the local community.
