Description of Melling-with-Wrayton
Melling-with- Wrayton is a civil parish located in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. The northeastern hamlet of Wrayton is a part of Melling. In the 2001 census, 290 people were counted as living in the parish; by the time of the next census, in 2011, that number had increased to 299 people.
Melling is located in the Lune Valley, which is home to the highest concentration of Norman castles outside of the Welsh border. There is proof of a motte in each of these locations, just as there is in Arkholme and Whittington, although in Melling there is no longer any sign of the bailey.
Geographical and architectural features
The motte at Melling stands in the middle of the hamlet, away from the current path of the river, on the edge of the first terrace, six meters above the flood plain, and within St. Wilfrid's vicarage garden. On the Melling side of the plain, the mound has been destroyed by landscaping works, although remnants of the Lune's original channels are still discernible.
St. Wilfrid's Church, sometimes known as "The Cathedral of the Lune Valley," once served as the manorial church in the castle's vanishing bailey. Its belfry contains six bells.
Railway
The Furness and Midland Joint Railway stopped at Melling until 1952. Although stopping trains haven't used the branch since 1960, the railway is still in use for through traffic. The next stop was Arkholme, and the tunnel to the south east led to Wennington, where the route connected with the Midland Railway. Since the Midland Railway between Lancaster and Wennington was discontinued in 1966, trains currently utilize this route to get from Morecambe/Lancaster to Leeds.
