The cathedral city of Gloucester in Gloucestershire, South West England, is also the county town. Gloucester is located on the Severn River, 31 kilometers east of Monmouth and 17 kilometers east of the Welsh border. It is sandwiched between the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. Gloucester's total population, including the surrounding suburbs, is close to 150 thousand. It's a port connected to the Severn Estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. It is known as Colonia Glevum Nervensis during the reign of Emperor Nerva, the Romans established the city and colony of Gloucester in 97 AD.

In 1155, King Henry II issued its first charter. Henry III was crowned in the Chapter House of Gloucester Cathedral with a gilded iron ring when he was just nine years old, in 1216. St. Peter's Abbey (later Gloucester Cathedral), established in 679, was followed by St. Oswald's Priory, Gloucester, established in the 880s or 890s, and Llanthony Secunda Priory, established in 1136, which attest to Gloucester's importance as a religious center during the Middle Ages. During the First English Civil War, Royalist armies besieged the city of Gloucester in 1643. The city resisted.

The city's main draw is Gloucester Cathedral, where the bodies of King Edward II and Walter de Lacy rest; the cathedral also appears in the Harry Potter movie. Museums, schools of art and science, a county jail built on the foundations of a Saxon and Norman castle, the Shire Hall (now the County Council's offices), and the Whitefield memorial church are well worth visiting. In 1814, a chalybeate spring was discovered in a park located in the southern part of the city, which led to the construction of a spa.

The city's economy is driven mostly by service businesses, with notable strengths in the financial, research, distribution, and light manufacturing sectors. It has a long and illustrious history in the aerospace sector.

Due to complaints from foreign customers, the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company in Brockworth rebranded as the Gloster Aircraft Company in 1926. Gloucester has a rich history in aviation, and the city's contributions to the development of the jet engine are commemorated by a statue in the downtown area.

Sheltered by the Cotswolds to the east, the Forest of Dean to the west, and the Malvern Hills to the north, the city sits on the eastern bank of the River Severn. The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal connects the city's docks to the Severn Estuary, making it possible for much larger ships to dock there than would be able to navigate the river itself all the way north of Gloucester to Haw Bridge. The ports, warehouses, and wharves had all fallen into ruin by the 1980s, when they were finally renovated. As a result, they have become a community park. The Gloucester Waterways Museum is located in a former warehouse, while other buildings in the area now serve as apartments, stores, and nightclubs. The Custom House is also home to the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. The Gloucester Yacht Club can be found close to the museum.
