Description of Foulridge, England

Located in Pendle, Lancashire, not far from the border with North Yorkshire, Foulridge is both a village and a civil parish. Located beyond Colne on the road leading to Skipton via the M65, it serves as a significant rest stop on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal's summit pound just before the canal descends into the Foulridge Tunnel. About a mile and a half (1.6 km) to the east of the town is Noyna Hill, a prominent geographical feature.

Foulridge is adjacent to the Pendle parishes of Salterforth, Kelbrook and Sough, Laneshaw Bridge, Colne, and Blacko.

Foulridge was a former township in the parish of Whalley. In 1866, it was designated as a civil parish, and starting in 1894, it became a part of the Burnley Rural District (until 1974). Colne was established in 1935 on land that was once part of the old township but had been separated from it in the east by Barnside and Monkhall. 

There's a legend about a cow that fell into the canal and made its way through the tunnel to safety. Word on the street is that a trip to the local watering hole helped revive it. The canal is nourished by a sizable reservoir. The canal can also be traversed by barge.

Foulridge, which was located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the old West Riding of Yorkshire's border, has been a part of Lancashire since the Middle Ages. Parts of Yorkshire, including Earby and Barnoldswick, were transferred to Lancashire with the creation of the Borough of Pendle in 1974, and Foulridge was further separated from the White Rose county as a result. Foulridge's central village hall features an antique sign that once marked the border with Yorkshire. The canal receives its water supply from a large reservoir in the village, which receives its water supply from smaller reservoirs located throughout the community.

Foulridge also had a train station that was decommissioned in 1959.

The population of the parish fell from 1,506 in the 2001 to 1,503 in the 2011 United Kingdom Census.
