Description of Whalley, Lancashire

Whalley, located in the Ribble Valley on the banks of the River Calder in Lancashire, England, is a sizable village and civil parish. Whalley Nab, a large wooded hill across the river from the village, provides a panoramic view. With a rise from 2,645 in the 2001 census to 3,629 in the 2011 count, the civil parish's population has doubled.

King Street is the main thoroughfare in Whalley and connects to Clitheroe Road. Wiswell, Billington, Barrow, and Read are some of the neighbouring hamlets to Whalley. The village of Downham and Pendle Hill, made famous in William Harrison Ainsworth's The Lancashire Witches, are conveniently close by.

Transport of Whalley

Trains run hourly from the Whalley station to Blackburn and Manchester Victoria via the impressive Whalley Viaduct. Northern is responsible for operating these. Buses leave from the main street and the Whalley Bus Station, taking passengers to nearby cities like Accrington, Blackburn, Burnley, Clitheroe, Longridge, and Skipton.

Blackburn Bus, Burnley Bus, Pilkington Bus, and Preston Bus all provide bus transportation. There are three stops for buses going south at the compact terminal. The bus stop on King Street, the main street through the village, serves passengers boarding buses travelling north toward Clitheroe and beyond.

Sport

By the late 1920s, Dean's Pleasure Grounds was hosting speedway events put on by a local club. There was only room for two riders on the tiny track at once. A modern photograph of the racetrack and showground depicts a level area next to a river and a helter skelter. Tennis courts, soccer fields, bowling alleys, and a cricket field are just some of the modern sports facilities available. The inaugural Roses Match between Lancashire County Cricket Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club was played at Station Road in Whalley in 1867.

Culture of Whalley

Whalley Pickwick Night is a Victorian-themed charity fundraiser held annually in December and named after Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. The first one took place in the 1980s as a late-night (from 6 to 9 p.m.) Christmas shopping event, and it has grown to include stalls, indoor events, and even a religious service in more recent years.

Billington, a neighbouring village, and Whalley have formed a joint brass band organisation called "Billington and Whalley Brass Band Club."
