Description of Sabden
Sabden is a small town and civil parish in the county of Lancashire, England, located in the Ribble Valley. Sabden can be found in a valley about three miles north-west of Padiham, to the south of Pendle Hill. Of the parish's total area of 2,450.9 acres (991.85 ha), the village itself occupies 103.2 acres (41.75 ha). Specifically, it's in the Pendle Forest, which is part of the larger Forest of Bowland National Park.
Geographical description of Sabden
The village is located on Pendle Hill, making it about 2 degrees cooler than the nearby towns of Clitheroe and Whalley, and its staggered crossroads are 500 feet above sea level. The Nick of Pendle is the highest point on a road at 993 feet, while Spence Moor is the highest point on land at 1,462 feet.
Up above the village to the north-east, Badger Wells Water (brook) flows down the slopes of Pendle and Churn Clough Reservoir, through a culvert under Whalley Road, and into Sabden Brook. The brook, a tributary of the Calder, passes under Bull Bridge (named for a long-defunct pub) and continues on through the heart of the village on its way to Whalley. Sabden Wood is the hilly area to the south of the town. Sabden is situated on a bedrock of Lancashire gritstone, and its soil is predominantly clay.
Economy of Sabden
Both the White Hart Inn (located on Padiham Road) and the Pendle Witch (located on Whalley Road) serve as bars for the villagers. There are also two convenience stores in Sabden, one of which is also a post office. Union Mill, located at the end of Watt Street, formerly housed the Pendle Antiques Centre but is now a commercial hub. Businesses such as a telecommunications manufacturer (DAC), an avionics company (Lynx Avionics), a kitchen's studio, and a cafe and sandwich shop known as "Sanwitches" all call this commercial complex home (sic). If you park at the White Hart and want to visit Brookside Garage, you can find it directly across the parking lot. Sabden's 'Contrast' furniture company operated at a time when manufacturing was more prevalent.
The modern Falcon House and its parking lot were all that remained of the historic Cobden Mill (named after Richard Cobden) as of the spring of 2012. Even "Marbill" has relocated to a nearby village, and the abandoned structure will soon be converted into new homes.
