Description of Bolton-by-Bowland

Located in the Ribble Valley area of Lancashire, Bolton-by-Bowland is both a village and a civil parish. The village was located in the West Riding of Yorkshire's Bowland Rural District prior to 1974. The population of the parish was only 498 in the 2001 census and 499 in the 2011 census.

History of Bolton-by-Bowland

Bolton-in-Bowland was the village's name back in the Middle Ages, when it was located on the south-eastern flank of the ancient Forest of Bowland. Bolton-by-Bowland manor, however, was never part of the Lordship of Bowland because it was originally part of the fee of the Percy family.

St. Peter and St. Paul's Church stands on what was likely a religious site as early as the 1190s.

Skirden Beck flows through the town, and it eventually meets up with the River Ribble. Many of the area's hikes begin in this quaint village, which offers parking, restrooms, and a visitor's centre.

Governance

Bolton-by-Bowland was a historic parish in the Staincliffe Wapentake's Western Division. In the middle of the nineteenth century, it was officially recognised as a civil parish and later became a part of the Bowland Rural District that was established in 1894. Towards the northern end of the parish, a 146-hectare (361-acre) area that had previously been a separate part of Tosside was ceded to Bolton-by-Bowland in 1938. When the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire was created in 1974, the civil parish was moved from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

The communities of Bolton-by-Bowland, Sawley, and Gisburn Forest are all represented on the same parish council. Parish is part of Bowland, Newton, and Slaidburn ward in Ribble Valley Borough Council, along with Bowland Forest Low, Slaidburn, Newton-in-Bowland, and Easington.
