Description of Paythorne
Location: Ribble Valley, Lancashire, England; Paythorne is a small village and civil parish. It borders North Yorkshire and can be found to the north-east of Clitheroe, by the River Ribble. Halton West and Nappa are also North Yorkshire parishes close to Paythorne, as are Newsholme, Horton, Gisburn, Sawley, Bolton-by-Bowland, and Gisburn Forest (all in Lancashire). Barnoldswick, 7 km (4.3 mi) south-east of the village, is the closest town. Although only a small portion of the west side of the parish lies within the Forest of Bowland AONB, Paythorne is located on its outskirts. The Ribble Way long-distance footpath runs right through the middle of town.
Paythorne is a tiny village that's home to the Buck Inn and a Methodist church, but that's about it. Gisburn has a mobile post office because the closest stationary Post Office is in Hellifield, 5 miles away. Several farms and moorland, such as Paythorne Moor to the north of the village, make up the landscape in the immediate vicinity of the settlement.
In the eleventh century, the village was recorded in the Domesday Book. Names such as "a thorn bush beside a pathway" and "a thorn bush in the shape of a peacock" have been proposed as possible explanations. Prior to becoming its own parish, Paythorne was a township within the parish of Gisburn in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Paythorne had a population of 95 in the 2001 census, but in 2011 the parish was merged with Newsholme and Horton (2001 pop. 50 and 76), making a total of 253. Population data for the parish of Newsholme were included in the 2011 United States Census.
In terms of local government, Paythorne is included in the Rimington and Gisburn ward of the Ribble Valley borough.
The parish is crossed by the Ribble Way and the Pennine Bridleway National Trail at the Paythorne Bridge.
