About Slaidburn
Description of Slaidburn
Located in the Ribble Valley area of Lancashire, Slaidburn is both a village and a civil parish. Approximately 5 thousand acres of the Bowland Forest are included in the parish.
Slaidburn, historically part of Yorkshire's West Riding, is located close to the head of the River Hodder and Stocks Reservoir in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is the Forest of Bowland. Despite the fact that farming is still the area's main industry, it has seen an increase in visitors in recent years, particularly those interested in hiking. Slaidburn and Easington, a rural parish to the north of Slaidburn, have the same parish council.
The population was 288 in the 2001 census, but 351 in the 2011 census after the parish was combined with Easington.
The St. Andrew parish church boasts a beautiful Georgian pulpit and a magnificent Jacobean screen. William Rimmer (1862-1936), a composer for brass bands, wrote the now-famous march for the Slaidburn Silver Band and gave it the village's name. With much fanfare, a brand-new community centre opened to rave reviews and constant use. Upstairs at the local watering hole Hark to Bounty is the historic halmote, or courthouse, of the Manor of Slaidburn.
Governance
Historically, the Honour of Clitheroe was under Dixon Robinson's stewardship for a considerable amount of time. It is part of the Bowland, Newton, and Slaidburn ward of Ribble Valley Borough Council, along with Bowland Forest Low, Newton, Easington, and Bolton-by-Bowland. Population in the ward increased from 1,243 in 2001 to 1,325 in 2011. There is only one council member for the ward, and right now it's Conservative Party member Joan Elms.
Geography of Slaidburn
Watling Street, a Roman road that runs from Manchester to Ribchester and on to Carlisle, skirts the west side of the village and then curves to the northwest at Low Fell. Commuters may recognise this stretch as the Hornby Road.
Croasdale Brook meets the River Hodder on the eastern edge of the village, creating a stream that flows through the parish.
Since this year marks the 400th anniversary of the Pendle witch trials, a new long-distance walking route has been established: the Lancashire Witches Walk. This is the fifth of ten Stephen Raw-designed tercet waymarkers along the trail, each of which features a verse from a poem by Carol Ann Duffy.
