About Bashall Eaves
Description of Bashall Eaves
Located about four miles (six kilometres) west of Clitheroe, Bashall Eaves is a village and civil parish in the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire, England. Bashall's proximity to the boundaries of the Forest of Bowland is reflected in the Old English element eaves in the name of the town. The village was transferred to Lancashire on 1 April 1974 for administrative purposes from the West Riding of Yorkshire under the provisions of the Local Government Act of 1972, despite its historical ties to that county.
There were 162 people residing in the parish of Bashall Eaves in the 2001 census, with 192 people counted in the most recent census in 2011. Nearly 4,000 acres are included in its total area. There are several farms, a post office, and a telephone booth in the village. Bashall Town farm, located a mile east of the village, is where Richard Baker opened Bowland Brewery in 2003 and Bashall Barn, a farm shop and restaurant. In 2015, the brewery made the move to Clitheroe's Holmes Mill. Bashall Hall is located near the Bashall Town farm.
The Worsley-Taylor family has owned the majority of the land in Bashall Eaves for generations. Mr. Christopher Orme of Strutt & Parker manages the Estate.
History of Bashall Eaves
Located on the historical border between Lancashire and Yorkshire, Bashall (also known as "Beckshalgh," which means the hill by the brooks) was once a part of the ancient Lordship of Bowland, which included a Royal Forest and a Liberty of ten manors spread across eight townships and four parishes. The entire area was nearly 300 square miles (800 square kilometres) in size. Slaidburn (Newton-in-Bowland, West Bradford, Grindleton), Knowlmere, Waddington, Easington, Bashall, Mitton, Withgill (Crook), Leagram, Hammerton, and Dunnow were some of the manors that made up the Liberty (Battersby).
In 1253, Thomas Talbot was given the manor of Bashall by Edmund de Lacy, the sixth Lord of Bowland. Through the early 1700s, it was owned solely by the Talbots. Chipping's Talbot Arms pub was named after the Talbot family for their long history there. From the year 1806, the Taylors ruled as the estate's lords. A beautiful Georgian manor house still stands in the area around Bashall Eaves.
A murder occurred in the town in 1934, and while detectives were looking into the death of Jim Dawson, they were met with a "wall of silence" from the locals.
