About Rishton

Description of Rishton, England

Located roughly 2 miles (3 km) west of Clayton-le-Moors and 4 miles (6 km) north-east of Blackburn, Rishton is a town in the Hyndburn region of Lancashire, England. From roughly 1894 to 1974, this area was a populated part of the city.

Its name comes from the fact that it was originally a farming community.

Possibly the first place in Great Britain where the cotton cloth calico was woven for sale was a handloom weavers shop in Rishton owned by Thomas Duxbury in the late 1776.

In late November 1884, P.W. Pickup Ltd. began mining at Rishton Colliery (53°45′58′′N 2°24′50′′W) on the Burnley Coalfield, and they worked there until 1941. The coaling quay on the canal was linked to the mine via tramroad. In service from 1955 until 1970, it pumped coal for the National Coal Board.

Rishton's cricket club, the Rishton Cricket Club, has a long history of success. In 1987, Viv Richards was one of many notable pros to suit up for the club. Former South African cricket captain Allan Donald, former England coach Duncan Fletcher, former West Indies international Michael Holding, former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie, and former Sri Lankan right-handed batsman and right-arm offbreak bowler Kumar Dharmasena are all former professionals.

Over twenty youth and adult teams play for Rishton United FC at the junior and senior levels. The football team is building its own stadium at the Primtetime Project off of the canal behind Hyndburn Academy. As a result, the club will soon have its own grass fields, in addition to a clubhouse and parking lot. The club fields teams at every level, from nippers (U7) to U16s and men's senior.

Geography of Rishton

Rishton is in low moorland to the north-east of Blackburn and to the north-west of Accrington. Rishton Heights, located to the north-west of the town, is 785 feet (239 m) above sea level, while the lowest point in the town is 250 feet (76 m) above sea level, near where Norden Brook falls into the River Hyndburn in the east.

Star Delph Quarry is a former sandstone quarry located close to the city, just 0.7 miles away. Sandstone extraction ceased there in 1897. In one section of the quarry, you may find Stigmaria rocks, which date back to the Carboniferous Era (314–315 Ma) and feature an imprint of Lepidodendron roots. Since this quarry has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, any destruction to the site is punishable by law. The exposed rock is Fletcher Bank Grit, a subset of Millstone Grit.
