Speaking at Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive board meeting on Thursday night, Shah expressed her outrage and disappointment at the senseless attacks, which have left many communities shaken.<\/p>\n
Shah, who is also a member of the Blackburn with Darwen Youth Forum, emphasized the importance of standing together against hate and violence. “We, as the Blackburn with Darwen youth forum, strongly denounce the recent violence happening on the streets in the UK by far-right groups,” she said. “No one should fear being attacked for their daily activities, faith, or mere existence. The threat of this violence is a harsh reality for many young people and must be stopped.”<\/p>\n
Shah’s remarks were met with applause and endorsement from the council leaders, including Cllr Mustafa Desai, Cllr Julie Gunn, and Cllr Phil Riley. Riley, the authority leader, welcomed the reaction of the community in refusing to participate in a proposed demonstration in Blackburn town centre over the weekend. “It’s a case of well done all round,” he said. “Now we have got to strike a balance between people being vigilant and overreacting. It’s a difficult balance. There are two ways these people can win – by coming in and wrecking the town centre or by destroying the town centre by threatening they will every week so people do not come in. It’s so far, so good – but we need to do our best to keep it that way.”<\/p>\n
The recent violence, which began in Southport and spread across the country, has left many communities reeling.
