The Conservative Party is reportedly considering paying TikTok influencers to create videos urging migrants not to attempt to cross the English Channel. Social media personalities from countries with significant illegal migration may be offered financial incentives to promote new Home Office regulations. The strategy, described as “novel,” was conceived by Cass Horowitz, a social media expert and advisor to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, aiming to circumvent a ban on government use of TikTok due to security concerns.
TikTok was chosen as the platform for this campaign because it is utilized by people smugglers to advertise journeys to the UK. The Home Office plans to invest approximately £1 million in advertising, with the goal of dissuading potential migrants from making the perilous Channel crossing, particularly those who are undecided or considering their options.
A Home Office spokesperson emphasized the importance of utilizing social media to counteract misinformation spread by people smugglers, stating that informing migrants about the risks of illegal migration is crucial.
In addition to the social media campaign, British and French authorities have agreed to increase drone surveillance to monitor Channel crossings. Home Secretary James Cleverly underscored the significance of cooperation between the UK and France in addressing security threats and combating illegal migration.
