A 27-year-old woman from Lancaster has been sentenced to 8 months in prison for stealing from retail stores and assaulting staff in Lancaster city centre. Ashleigh Kane, of Ambleside Road, was handed the sentence by a district judge at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (August 22).

According to court proceedings, Kane stole seven items from retail stores on multiple occasions in June. On two separate occasions, she became abusive and threatening to staff, and on one of those occasions, she physically assaulted an off-duty police officer who had gone to assist retail staff.

The court heard that Kane’s behavior was not only illegal but also caused fear and intimidation among retail staff. Her actions were deemed to be a serious breach of the peace and a threat to public safety.

In addition to the prison sentence, Kane was also issued a 2-year criminal behavior order. The order prohibits her from entering any retail store in Lancaster city centre, being abusive towards any retail employee, and assaulting any retail employee.

The police have welcomed the sentence and the criminal behavior order, saying that it sends a strong message that theft and violence towards retail staff will not be tolerated.

“We take a zero-tolerance approach to those individuals in our community who steal from our local businesses, especially those who are abusive and violent towards our retail workers who are only trying to do their job,” said PC Shaun Foster, community beat manager for Lancaster city centre.

“We will always try to take positive action and put them before the courts. It is good to see on this occasion the courts agreeing to issue a court order to target Kane’s behaviour in the long term.”

The police and local businesses are working together to address the issue of theft and violence towards retail staff. They are urging anyone with information about similar incidents to come forward and report them to the police.

Retail staff are also being encouraged to take steps to stay safe while working, such as being aware of their surroundings, avoiding confrontations, and knowing how to respond in emergency situations.

The community is being asked to support local businesses and retail employees by promoting a culture of respect and kindness towards retail workers. Anyone who witnesses or is a victim of theft or violence is encouraged to report it to the police immediately.

Kane’s criminal behavior order will be in place for 2 years, and she will be closely monitored by the police during that time. The sentence and order are a reminder that theft and violence towards retail staff will not be tolerated, and that those who engage in such behavior will face the consequences.

In the meantime, local businesses and retail staff are breathing a sigh of relief that the perpetrator has been brought to justice. They are grateful for the support of the police and the community in addressing this issue, and they are looking forward to a safer and more secure working environment in the future.
