Burnley Legends Unite to Support Mum’s Brain Tumour Battle

Roughlee resident Claire Nutter, 47, has been fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a devastating brain tumor last year. Despite the challenges she has faced, Claire has received an outpouring of support from her community, including a special football fundraiser featuring former Burnley FC players.

Claire’s journey began when she started experiencing intense headaches and spells of severe dizziness. Her symptoms were initially dismissed as hormone-related, likely associated with menopause. However, further testing revealed a malignant brain tumor, which required immediate attention.

Since her diagnosis, Claire has undergone three life-saving brain tumor operations, where surgeons were only able to remove 50% of the tumor. She is currently undergoing a six-month cycle of chemotherapy following initial surgery for an oligodendroglioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

To show their support for Claire during this difficult time, a team of former Burnley FC players, including Paul Weller, David Eyres, and Andy Payton, will be lacing up their boots once again to participate in a charity football match. The event, organized by Claire’s brother-in-law, Wayne Dowell, a former Clarets defender, will take place at Padiham’s football ground in Well Street on Sunday, September 15.

Gates will open at 1pm, with kick-off at 2pm. Tickets are available on the day for £5 for adults and £2 for children, with all proceeds going towards Claire’s treatment and the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

The event has received widespread support from the local community, with local businesses donating prizes for a raffle and other activities. Claire is overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown by her community, saying, “I’m so grateful for the help from everyone around me. Being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor was the last thing I could’ve ever imagined, and I’m grateful for the support and kindness shown by my community.”

The event is not only a celebration of Claire’s bravery but also an opportunity to raise awareness about brain tumors and the impact they have on individuals and families. Brain tumors can affect anyone at any age, and unfortunately, just 12% of those diagnosed with a brain tumor survive beyond five years compared to an average of 54% across all cancers.

The Rosemere Cancer Foundation is a charity that provides vital support to cancer patients and their families in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The foundation relies on donations and fundraising events to continue its work, and the football match will be a significant boost to their efforts.

In addition to the football match, there will be live music performed by singer Amy Doherty from 4:30pm, adding to the festive atmosphere. The event promises to be a fun-filled afternoon for all the family, with plenty of opportunities to get involved and show support for Claire and the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

As Claire looks to the future, she is determined to stay positive and focused on her recovery. She says, “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Wayne and the ‘Vintage Clarets’ and everyone else who’s playing in the match for their time and making this event possible. I’m overwhelmed with everyone’s generosity and kindness, and I hope everyone will have a great day and help raise more awareness about this life-changing disease.”

The community is invited to come together and show their support for Claire and the Rosemere Cancer Foundation at Padiham’s football ground on September 15. Let’s rally around Claire and make a difference in the lives of those affected by brain tumors.

Brain tumors are a devastating diagnosis that can affect anyone at any age. According to the Brain Tumor Research charity, over 11,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year in the UK, with the majority being adults. Brain tumors can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.

The symptoms of a brain tumor can vary depending on the location and size of the tumor. Common symptoms include headaches, seizures, memory loss, and changes in personality or behavior. In Claire’s case, her symptoms were initially dismissed as hormone-related, but further testing revealed a malignant brain tumor.

Treatment for brain tumors typically involves surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The type of treatment used depends on the type and location of the tumor, as well as the patient’s overall health.

Fundraising events like the football match are crucial in supporting the work of charities like the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. The foundation relies on donations and fundraising events to continue its work, which includes providing vital support to cancer patients and their families.

The Rosemere Cancer Foundation provides a range of services, including counseling, financial support, and practical help. The charity also funds research into new treatments and therapies for cancer patients.

The football match will be a significant boost to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s fundraising efforts, and all proceeds will go towards supporting Claire’s treatment and the charity’s work.
