A fire erupted on Monday at a waterpark under construction within one of the Nordic region’s largest amusement parks, casting a massive plume of black smoke over Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city.
The blaze engulfed several waterslides that were yet to be opened at Liseberg park, prompting evacuations of nearby hotel and office facilities. Authorities, including police and fire officials, are currently assessing the situation and have not confirmed any casualties.
Mårten Westlund, Liseberg’s head of communications, stated to Aftonbladet that there are no reported injuries at this time, but efforts are underway to verify this.
The fire originated at the Oceana water park section, which was slated to open this summer. The construction of the park reportedly cost 1.2 billion kronor ($10.6 million), according to TT. Westlund noted that the fire began in the area housing the four large slides.
Located in downtown Gothenburg, Liseberg is a popular tourist spot in Sweden.
